Data Loss Problem

Contrary to what you may have heard, all data will eventually be lost. Most business currently trust their data to RAID6 technology. You might ask the question; does the world really need a storage system that is more robust than RAID6?  After all, drive MTBF numbers would lead you to believe that the likelihood of a storage system with more than 2 drives failing in your lifetime is almost impossible.

Here are two simple examples: Seagate sold a Barracuda drive that "bricked" (stopped working), because after a few months of use, all data was lost until a new code set was installed. IBM sold the infamous "DeathStar" (DeskStar) drive that failed in such huge numbers as to prompt a lawsuit and the nickname. In both cases, the manufacturers never changed their MTBF numbers, even though both drives had serious reliability problems reported around the world. What does this mean about MTBF? You better hope that your system doesn't already have the next "brick" or "DeathStar" drive in it. But, when it comes to data protection, hope is not a strategy.

The probability of real world data loss is too still too high for business critical, HPC, and Big Data applications. MTBF numbers are theoretical calculations that are never realized when running your storage system and never updated by manufacturers with real service data. Drive reliability in the real world is much less than the manufacturers published failure rates (see articles to the right). It also does not take into account unrecoverable read errors as drives have grown in capacity. That data shows that a single drive will have an unrecoverable read error (sector corruption) every 2 days and a large RAID system of 100 or more drives will have an event every 30 minutes. Add to that statistic the probability of delays and mistakes during service, and Silent Data Corruption and you have a recipe for disaster.
